This is a picture of my new pinuti, or "shining blade", a kind of native Filipino machete that is useful, sharp, and easy to carry while hiking. It was crafted by an old Matigsalug swordsmith near Malikongkong, who is hard to communicate with because he only speaks his native language and seems to be always chewing on betel-nut. I asked him to decorate it in his tribe's native style, and was pleasantly surprised to find that he not only made a nice sheath for it, and a handle made from Carabao horn, but he managed to etch engraved designs on the blade.
